About Chiropractic

What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a non-invasive, holistic, primary healthcare approach.

Every structure and function in your body is regulated by communication through your central nervous system, which consists of your brain and spinal cord.  If there are symptomatic or asymptomatic dysfunctions present in your body, these are signs of a nervous system that cannot effectively communicate with its end-organs.

The body posses innate intelligence designed to self-regulate and self-heal - if the body is struggling, something is preventing this state.  The nervous system cannot adapt to the dysfunction, as it cannot connect to it. The blockage of that communication or connection is called a Vertebral Subluxation.

Using your nervous system as the entry point, a qualified Doctor of Chiropractic will analyse your entire spinal column for the presence of Vertebral Subluxations - these are what we call the blockages in the communication pathways between your brain and your body that cause dysfunction and dis-ease.

Subluxations interfere with the normal function of your central nervous system and can be responsible for creating dis-ease in the system, as they interrupt signals the brain and body use to communicate.  They prevent the body from reaching its naturally attained self-regulating and self-healing state.  When dis-ease has been present for a chronic period of time, it evolves into disease - a state that can have far-reaching consequences for your health.

The detected subluxations are corrected with specific spinal adjustments, delivered by hand or handheld instrument, and directed into the central nervous system via specific segments of the vertebral column. The intention of the adjustment is to restore optimum neurological function and good health to your body.

Chiropractic adjustments restore the communication flow by removing the interference, and the natural intelligence of your body does the rest.

In short, if your spine acts as a cable supplying information throughout your body, adjustments are applied to unblock the cable. The freely-travelling neurological information then encourages your body to heal, so you can

What are Vertebral Subluxations?

  Where do they come from?

Subluxations usually result from stresses that cannot be managed, adapted to, or integrated by your body.  These stressors can arise from physical, emotional, and chemical origins - your lifestyle plays a large part.  While subluxations themselves may be challenging to pinpoint, their effects cannot be ignored or easily dismissed.

Think, a case of non-specific localised pain that no-one has been able to diagnose or effectively treat.  The sufferer ends up on a regimen of therapies and pills that are designed to manage the complaint, not heal or integrate it.  Examining the same case from a Chiropractic approach, we usually find a Vertebral Subluxation at the root cause.  Once the interference is cleared, the body begins to return to optimal function.

Your body is primarily a sensory system, and everything it does on the inside is a response to what is happening on the outside.  Subluxations block the information flow, so the brain cannot see the body, and the body cannot speak to the brain.  The two systems start to dis-integrate and the body falls into dysfunction - this is when symptoms usually start to show or flare up.

Think, temperature: if your skin feels hot you will sweat - if your skin feels cold you will get goosebumps.  This is a perfect example of a key communication loop that your body relies on to maintain optimum function.  If the signals of hot and cold could not reach the brain, the body would not know to respond - you’d either overheat or become hypothermic.  In other words, dysfunction.

When the level of stress coming in exceeds the level of stress being expressed or integrated, your body blocks off the area to protect itself.  The brain begins to disconnect and subluxations can form.  Over time subluxations become ingrained enough to form patterns, and this unique distribution of subluxations forms the template for your health state.

How do you become a Chiropractor?

Chiropractic is an art, a science and a philosophy.  Our education is formed from components of all three disciplines.

Appropriately qualified Chiropractors are called to complete a 4 to 6 year programme of study at an accredited chiropractic institution.  The curriculum contains extensive studies in neurology, neuro-anatomy, joint biomechanics, chiropractic adjustive techniques, pathophysiology, nutrition, pathology, clinical skills and chiropractic health philosophy. Chiropractic students complete a minimum of 1,000 hours of supervised clinical training and practice in campus clinics and outreach centres during their studies. This rigorous education ensures that when a Chiropractor qualifies they are thoroughly prepared to offer the most comprehensive and collaborative health solutions possible.

In short, a chiropractors’ studies are as detailed as what you might expect a medical doctor to complete.  Where we differ in our education and practice-focus is with the use of pharmaceuticals – medical doctors extensively study pharmaco-therapeutics where chiropractors study the application art of spinal adjustments.
